The Policy Studies Organization

1527 New Hampshire Avenue NW

The Policy Studies Organization (PSO) is a publisher of academic journals and book series, sponsor of conferences, and producer of programs.  It seeks to disseminate scholarship and information to serve those making and evaluating policy.  It was founded as an outgrowth of the American Political Science Association, for those in a variety of fields who were interested in how public policy and organizational policy were being studied and discussed.

The Policy Studies Organization publishes twelve journals in cooperation with Wiley-Blackwell and Berkeley Electronic Press:

Policy and Internet (University of Oxford)
Review of Policy Research (Ryerson University)
Digest of Middle East Studies (University of Wisconsin)
Risk, Hazards & Crisis in Public Policy (Pacific Disaster Center, University of Hawaii)
Policy Studies Journal (University of Colorado, Denver)
Politics & Policy (Universidad IberoAmericana, Mexico City)
Latin American Policy (Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico City)
Asian Politics & Policy (University of the Philippines)
World Medical and Health Policy (George Mason University)
Poverty & Public Policy (University of Missouri, Kansas City)
Policy Studies Yearbook (University of Oklahoma)
Proceedings of the PSO (PSO Headquarters, Washington DC).

The PSO also publishes three book series on: Studies on Public Policy, Middle East Classics and Challenges Facing Chinese Political Development, in cooperation with Lexington books (Rowland & Littlefield).

Join PSO members at these upcoming conferences:

  • Westminster Debate, January 4, 2013, at the the Peabody Hotel in Orlando. This event is also part of the annual convention of the Southern Political Science Association.
  • Middle East Dialogue, February 21, 2013, at the historic Whittemore House, Washington DC. This event is in connection with the PSO's Digest of Middle East journal.

This event is co-sponsored by the World Medical and Health Policy Journal, the Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy and is also part of the annual convention of the Midwest Political Science Association.

The Policy Studies Organization is cooperating with American Public University in a number of projects to involve the burgeoning  online education community with learned and research societies.  The Policy Studies Organization along with other national and international learned societies is a member of the National Humanities Alliance, located at 21 Dupont Circle near our offices. The Alliance tracks government developments and represents our commons interests to Congress.  There are more than 3600 universities and institutions in the PSO membership as well as individuals in more than 93 countries. From its headquarters in a historic house near Dupont Circle in Washington DC, once the home of the families of President James Garfield and the labor leader Samuel Gompers, the society organizes conferences, seminars, the publication of journals and books, and an increasing Internet presence. The Policy Studies Organization helped establish in Washington and continues a cordial friendship with the
Roosevelt Institution, a policy discussion and research society on more than 140 university campuses which involves students in learning about major public policy issues.

The Policy Studies Organization sponsors a limited number of interns in Washington DC, working with our officers in developing new and expanded programs. Please contact Daniel Gutierrez for more information.

PSO and Important Values

PSO is committed to social responsibility, believing that all organizations should contribute positively to the environment. Publications are printed on recycled paper by union labor, and products are purchased from concerns whose employment practices are progressive. We support diversity, encourage feedback from all those with whom we deal, and cooperate with Wiley-Blackwell, Berkeley Electronic Press and other partners to donate or provide publications at much reduced cost to developing countries. More than 600 institutions in 60 developing countries receive our publications free of charge.

Books for PSO Headquarters

Those of you who have visited since the Policy Studies Organization moved to Washington know that 1527 New Hampshire Avenue is a large place -- and if you have books, political memorabilia, or even antiques! their gift to the headquarters would be permanently acknowledged on the website and would be tax deductible. We have lots of empty shelves, so if you are crowded, let us help! A note to our executive director, Daniel Gutierrez, will certainly elicit a prompt reply.
